A remote that stops working is a common problem. In many cases the cause is simple to identify. We walk through the most common causes, from simple to complex.
What you can check yourself
The most obvious cause is a flat battery. Replace the coin cell battery (usually a CR2032) and try again. Note that many keys have a mechanical emergency blade behind a flap, which lets you open the car even without a working remote. A second common cause is that the key has lost its pairing with the car. This can happen after replacing the car battery or after certain maintenance work. The key then needs to be re-paired.
When do you need a specialist?
If a new battery makes no difference and the key does not function normally with the emergency blade either, something more serious is wrong. Possible causes include a damaged or worn electronic component inside the key, damage from water or a hard drop, or a faulty receiver module in the car itself. All of these require diagnosis with professional equipment. We can read out exactly what is wrong on location and determine whether repair or replacement is the best solution.
Repair or replace?
Sometimes the key housing is broken while the electronics are intact. In that case we replace only the housing, which is considerably cheaper than a new key. If the chip or transmitter is damaged, a new key with programming is the right approach. We assess on the spot what the most cost-effective solution is and give you a fixed price upfront.
